No tree Christmas: A flowery season with celebratory blooms

Christmas is a time for chilly nights, Santa sights, and sweet delights.

When you think of winter, we’ll admit, flowers may not be the first thing that pops in your mind. But hey, where there is family and gift-giving, flowers surely can’t be far behind.

And that’s where Flower Nation, your choice online florist, comes in. Whether you are considering flower gifting, or looking for floral decorations, we have an array of beautiful blooms that will help set you in the Christmas mood.

Because it’s the holidays season, we thought we should come up with a list. Not of who’s naughty or nice, but a selection of the top Christmas flowers that is befitting of the season. (Just so you know, not all are available in your tropical flower shop Malaysia, but it’s still great to learn about them.)

And so, we present to you the top 8 flowers of the season (as well as some berries and greens) and what they symbolise, to make your flower gifting that much more meaningful.

  1. Poinsettia

Red poinsettia

It’s the OG of holiday plants. Known for their classic red and green foliage, these stunning beauties are a holiday season staple across the world.

You’ll usually find them in Christmas floral arrangements, churches, and perhaps on your doorstep with a bright red bow to match!

Over the years, the poinsettia has come to symbolise the Star of Bethlehem due to its unique shape, while its bright red colour represents the blood of Christ. That’s a true Christmas bloom!

  1. Holly

Have a holly, jolly Christmas! And yes, here’s another berry to add onto the list. While it’s not exactly a flower again, hollies are commonly found in Christmas decorations, and they are just so festive.

There’s no doubt these prickly little berries are a holiday favourite, but they’ve also been a dependable holiday decoration for thousands of years now. Since they are a natural part of our winter landscape, they have provided a cheap and easy way to decorate for the holidays. We might not be able to get fresh hollies here, but decorative ones are sure to add some joy to floral decorations.

Holly has been a major religious symbol for over 2000 years. The ancient Romans even associated it with their Sun god, Saturn. Some believe holly to have held a major part in the Crucifixion of Christ, not just as a reminder but as an actual physical part of the event.

It is said that holly was the type of branch used to make Jesus’ crown of thorns.

  1. Carnation

Christmas carnations

Carnations are a go-to for just about any occasion you can think of, not just Mother’s Day, because of their colour variety and general hardiness.

Red carnations are especially apt for Christmas. Red carnations symbolise love, admiration, and friendship, so you really can’t go wrong. Alternatively, carnations are also commonly available in green, white, and other variegated varieties!

  1. Rose

Christmas rose

Roses are just about the most popular flower around, and they come in every colour imaginable.

Emma Goldman said it best, “I’d rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck.” So take note, gift-giver!

The meaning of the rose depends on its colour. The red rose, for example, symbolises love, white rose symbolises purity and innocence of youth, and green rose symbolises growth and abundance.

  1. Amaryllis

Christmas red amaryllis

Amaryllis is a tropical flowering plant. What makes them so special at Christmas time? When grown as a houseplant, they bloom throughout November and December, perfect timing for the holidays!

Amaryllis symbolise three main things: beauty, attention, and pride. Every amaryllis bloom is always gorgeous, and it’s no surprise that they are incredible eye-catching. As for the latter, Victorians consider Amaryllis to be a symbol of vanity and pride.

  1. Wax Flower

The perfect mixture of sugar, spice, and everything nice!

With their sweet fragrant blooms sprouting from spiky evergreen shrubs, these wildflowers are pros at spreading good vibes and good cheer.

Wax flowers are known for their ability to spread joy and happiness, and their extended vase life symbolises a long and happy marriage. The perfect bloom for your significant other to wake up to on Christmas morning!

  1. Paperwhites

Christmas paperwhites

Paperwhites, also known as narcissus, may not look like much of a holiday bloom, but when grown at home, you can nudge them to pop up right in time for the holidays!

Paperwhites and other narcissus plants symbolise rebirth and renewal, as they are among the first to bloom in spring. They are also super easy to be ‘forced open’ indoors, simply by placing them in a cool room with strong, indirect sunlight and watering only on the underside of the bulb.

  1. Orchid

It’s no secret that orchids are perfect both for flower gifting, as well as floral decorations. They are not only beautiful, but also require really low maintenance. Plus, they have a plethora of positive symbolisms.

Orchids symbolise perfection, beauty, love, as well as luxury. In addition, they are non-toxic to pets, making them great gifts for animal lovers.

Bonus: Norfolk Island Pine

These lovely trees make the perfect table-top Christmas tree for offices, apartments, or anywhere a large tree just won’t seem to work.

Even better, they can grow indoors for many years, and are fairly easy to maintain.

A study conducted by NASA found that Norfolk Island Pines purify the air indoors by removing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). VOCs are present throughout your home, as they are a result of many beauty products, dry-cleaned clothes, paint, permanent markers, glue, and cleaning products.
